Year 4 Design and Technology Project Exploring Traditional Mexican God’s Eyes

During DT lessons last term, Year 4 were learning to use sewing machines and working independently to create God’s Eyes, a traditional Mexican craft first made over 500 years ago for prayer and protection.

The four points represent wind, fire, water, and earth, with the centre seen as a doorway to the spirit world. Pupils chose a colour scheme (such as hot, cold, harmonious, or complementary) and made four-point God’s Eyes before progressing to six-point or larger designs.

They also experimented with their own wrapping styles to create different effects.

This project highlighted the importance of developing practical skills alongside creativity, independence, and an understanding of cultural traditions.
