Co-Curricular Activities

At Notting Hill Prep, we believe that a child’s education is about far more than what happens between 8.10 am and 3.15 pm. Our co-curricular programme is a core part of the NHP experience, offering every pupil the chance to discover new passions, build confidence, and develop skills that classroom learning alone cannot provide.

With well over 100 clubs running across the week – spanning sport, the arts, languages, technology and academic enrichment – there is something to spark curiosity in every child, whatever their interests or stage of development.

Why Co-Curricular Activities Matter

Decades of educational research point to the same conclusion: children who take part in a rich mix of extra-curricular activities tend to do better both in and out of the classroom. Our curriculum is excellent, but co-curricular clubs help children to:

  • Build confidence and resilience. Trying something new – and getting better at it over time – teaches children that effort leads to progress, a lesson that carries into every part of school life.
  • Develop social skills and friendships. Clubs bring together pupils from different year groups and classes, widening friendship circles and teaching children to collaborate with others they might not otherwise get to know.
  • Discover hidden talents and passions. A child who has never picked up a chess piece or a paintbrush may discover a genuine gift and a lifelong interest.
  • Balance academic demands with creativity and play. A full day of learning is more sustainable and more enjoyable when it is balanced with music, movement, drama, or a chance to build something with friends.
  • Develop leadership and independence. Older pupils often take on responsibility within clubs according to our pastoral care values, whether that’s mentoring younger children in coding club or captaining a sports team, building the kind of independence that prepares them well for senior school.
  • Support wellbeing. Physical activity, creative expression and time spent with friends outside formal lessons all contribute to a child’s happiness and sense of belonging.

How NHP Delivers

Because NHP is a Thinking School with high academic expectations, we place equal importance on giving children the space, time and encouragement to explore beyond the curriculum. Our co-curricular offer is built around a few key principles:

  • Breadth over the school week. Clubs run at lunchtime and after school every day, Monday to Friday, so that children can build a personal timetable that reflects their own interests without it feeling like “more school.”
  • Specialist-led wherever possible. From martial arts and gymnastics to LAMDA drama and orchestra, many of our clubs are led by specialist coaches and teachers, so children are learning proper technique and habits from the very start.
  • Something for every age. Clubs are tailored by year group, from Y1 Lego Club and Mini Coders in the early years through to Y6–8 Debating, Bridge and invitation-only performance ensembles for our most experienced musicians and artists in the senior years.
  • Progression and challenge. Many clubs – from chess to robotics to art – are designed so pupils can return year after year and keep building on what they’ve learned, with invitation-only groups (such as our Senior Recital Choir and Advanced Art Club) offering an extra level of challenge for those ready for it.
  • A true mix of sport, arts, academic and life skills. We are careful not to let any one area dominate. Alongside popular sports clubs, children can choose coding, robotics, debating, textiles, fashion illustration, poetry, and even a “General Knowledge Club”.

What’s On Offer

Here is a flavour of the huge range of clubs available across a typical week at NHP:

A full, up-to-date list of clubs – including which are open to all pupils and which are by invitation only – is shared with families at the start of each term, as clubs vary term to term according to demand and the school calendar.

Encouraging every child to get involved

We know that trying something new can feel daunting, particularly for younger children or those who are naturally more reserved. Form teachers and club leaders actively encourage pupils to step outside their comfort zone, and our house system and pupil leadership roles (School Council, House Captains, Sports Captains and more) give children further ways to build confidence and take on responsibility beyond the clubs programme itself.

Parents are welcome to speak to their child’s form teacher or the school office about which clubs might suit their child, particularly during their first term at NHP.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Co-Curricular Clubs

How many co-curricular clubs does NHP offer?

NHP offers well over 100 clubs across the school year, covering sport, music, drama, art, languages, coding, chess and more, with a fresh timetable of options shared with families each term.

Are clubs available to all year groups?

Yes. Clubs are tailored by age and stage, from clubs designed specifically for our youngest pupils in Reception and Year 1 through to more advanced, often invitation-only, groups for pupils in Years 5 to 8.

Do children need any prior experience to join a club?

No. The vast majority of clubs are open to beginners and are designed to introduce children to a new skill or interest, regardless of previous experience.

Are any clubs invitation-only?

A small number of clubs, typically our most advanced music, art and choir groups, are by invitation, offering an extra challenge to pupils who have shown particular aptitude or commitment in those areas.

How do parents find out which clubs are running each term?

A full, confirmed list of clubs is sent to families before the start of each term. Popular clubs can fill up quickly, so early sign-up is recommended.

Is there an extra cost for co-curricular clubs?

Details of any additional costs, where they apply, are set out alongside the termly clubs list; many clubs are included as part of school life at no extra charge. Families can contact the school office for specific pricing information.

Do clubs run every day of the week?

Yes. NHP runs a full programme of lunchtime and after-school clubs from Monday to Friday, giving pupils flexibility to build a weekly timetable around their own interests.
